India’s Tea, Coffee & Cereal Exports Gain Strong Momentum: A New Chapter for Agricultural Trade
India’s agricultural export sector continues to strengthen its position in global markets, with tea, coffee, and other cereals emerging as some of the country’s fastest-growing export categories. According to the Trade Intelligence and Analytics (TIA) Portal of the Department of Commerce, exports of these commodities recorded robust growth during April–January FY2025–26, highlighting India’s increasing competitiveness in international agricultural trade.
Among the standout performers is coffee, which reached export earnings of USD 1.62 billion during the reporting period. This remarkable performance reflects growing international demand for Indian coffee, driven by its rich aroma, distinctive flavor profiles, and consistent quality. Indian coffee has earned a strong reputation in markets across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Asia, where buyers increasingly value sustainably sourced and premium-quality beans.
India’s tea exports have also demonstrated impressive resilience, reaching USD 865 million. The country’s diverse range of black, green, orthodox, and specialty teas continues to find favor among consumers worldwide. Strong demand from traditional markets, along with increasing consumption in emerging economies, has contributed to steady export growth and reinforced India’s standing as one of the world’s leading tea suppliers.
Another encouraging development is the growth in exports of other cereals, which reached USD 324 million during the same period. Rising global concerns about food security, coupled with increasing demand for nutritious grains, have created new opportunities for Indian exporters. Products such as maize, millets, and specialty cereals are gaining wider acceptance due to their nutritional benefits and suitability for diverse food applications.
Several factors are driving this positive export momentum. India’s vast agricultural base, favorable climatic conditions, improved farming practices, and expanding food processing capabilities have significantly enhanced the country’s export competitiveness. Additionally, exporters are increasingly focusing on international quality standards, traceability, sustainable sourcing, and value-added processing, enabling them to meet the evolving requirements of global buyers.
Government initiatives promoting agricultural exports, improvements in logistics infrastructure, and stronger trade partnerships have further supported India’s export growth. Better connectivity through ports, streamlined export procedures, and digital trade intelligence platforms are helping exporters identify new markets, understand demand trends, and make informed business decisions. These developments are opening new opportunities for Indian agricultural products in both established and emerging markets.
The strong performance of tea, coffee, and cereal exports also reflects a broader shift in global consumer preferences. Buyers today increasingly seek high-quality, sustainably produced agricultural commodities with reliable supply chains. India’s ability to consistently deliver premium products while maintaining competitive pricing positions the country as a preferred sourcing destination for international importers, distributors, retailers, and food manufacturers.
Looking ahead, the outlook for India’s agricultural exports remains promising. Growing global demand for premium beverages, healthier food products, and diversified sourcing strategies is expected to create additional opportunities for exporters. Continued investment in quality enhancement, sustainable farming, value addition, and export infrastructure will further strengthen India’s role in the global agricultural supply chain.
