India–New Zealand FTA Set to Take Effect by Year-End: A New Chapter for Bilateral Trade

India and New Zealand are moving closer to implementing their landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay expressing confidence that the agreement will come into force by the end of 2026 after both countries complete their domestic ratification processes. The development marks a significant milestone in strengthening economic ties between the two nations and is expected to create new opportunities for businesses, exporters, and investors.
The FTA was signed in April 2026 after successful negotiations aimed at improving market access, reducing trade barriers, and enhancing bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Once implemented, the agreement will simplify trade procedures, encourage investment, and make it easier for businesses in both countries to access each other’s markets.
One of the biggest highlights of the agreement is the immediate tariff-free access for around 57% of New Zealand’s exports to India from the first day the FTA comes into force. Over time, additional products are expected to receive preferential treatment, creating a more competitive trading environment and strengthening supply chains between the two economies.
For India, the agreement is expected to boost exports in sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and processed food. Indian exporters will also benefit from simplified customs procedures, improved market access, and greater certainty for long-term trade with New Zealand.
Beyond merchandise trade, the FTA is expected to deepen cooperation in investment, technology, education, services, innovation, and sustainable development. It reflects both countries’ commitment to expanding economic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region while promoting resilient and future-ready trade.
As India continues to strengthen its network of global trade agreements, the India–New Zealand FTA represents another strategic step toward diversifying export markets and improving international competitiveness. Businesses that prepare early for the agreement will be well-positioned to leverage new opportunities once the FTA becomes operational.
